Selawik
|
Near the end of the Kenai Peninsula, seventeen miles beyond "the end of the road" at Homer, picturesque Seldovia is the oldest port of Kachemak Bay. The name is a translation of the Russian word for "Herring Bay," a reference to the once lively commercial fisheries which sustained the area. It is still home port to many halibut, crab, salmon, and cod fishermen and their vessels.
The community of 300 provides a fine example of rural, maritime Alaska -- scenic surroundings, rustic waterfront buildings -- but convenient, with restaurants, shops, accommodations and other amenities.
