Breeding occurs in May or June after 2-
15 days of courtship. It's not until October or November, however, when the
fertilized egg begins its embryonic stage of development inside the womb.
Bears give birth to the smallest of all mammalian young in proportion to the
size of the parent. The young are born helpless and weigh about 13 ounces
(364 gr). Two or three cubs are born usually between January and March. They
remain with their mother up to five years. The sow will usually give birth
to another litter the 1st spring after separating from her cubs.
Brown bears normally live as lone
individuals, except for females accompanied by their cubs. However, brown
bears congregate where food is abundant, such as at salmon streams or the
garbage dump.
Beginning in November or December, Kodiak Bears enter a
period of dormancy that ends in around May. They spend this period in their
dens. Their metabolic rate is reduced and their body temperature drops. This
is not considered complete hibernation, since the bears occasionally emerge
from their dens to forage during warm spells of weather or during years when
food was scarce prior to going into their.
Their life span is 20 –25
years.
