The town of Kodiak was the original capital of Alaska (under Russian ownership).  The Island of Kodiak, also known as Alaska's Emerald Island, is home to the Kodiak Brown Bear.  Man, woman, and bear alike love Kodiak for the abundance of salmon.  If you are in the area in late May, make sure you plan a trip to the Kodiak Crab Festival, an annual event that celebrates the region's "Deadliest Catch", and main industry.
